If it's sda3 rather than hda3 then I'm guessing it's a SATA disc and the 
problem is the driver for the SATA controller on the laptop's 
motherboard. Does modprobe say which module failed? Which module is 
Ubuntu loading to mount that disc? It's sata_nv probably, if it's an 
nVidia chipset.

Also, if your root partition cannot be mounted, have you checked that 
grub is actually finding the right partition? See for example the end of:
