Good point - let's stick with that for 1.0 at least.

Some studios deliberately do not connect their production machines to 
the internet, although this is generally due to problems with Windows of 
course. I also understand why some people prefer not to upgrade software 
at all once the machine does what the users want, although they will be 
missing out on lots of future free software goodness.

I have a reservation about putting package update tools directly on the 
desktop. It may suit the Ubuntu model, where there is no root user, but 
in my own experience, not giving inexperienced users root access is one 
of the key things that makes a free software desktop more reliable.
