I see. I don't want if it's acceptable, but a solution would be to set
the debconf-preseed so that  only dhcp is tried  (and silently keep on
if it fails), and now manual configuration is allowed. This would make
sure that during the installation of portmap and printconf the network
is either up  and running (dhcp   was successful) or not available  at
all, and this should make them happier I guess.

People needing manual set  up could use  the  network admin after  the
installation is completed.
