Thanks a lot for you tests.   I guess that  this is not happening with
your  own self-copiled kernel,  right?

The only difference there could be is that you probably used a vanilla
2.6.18, while I've started   from   the latest Debian  kernel   source
package, which include  the  2.6.18.1 patch and some   Debian specific
patches.
