In Joel's case, yes, but Ben had the same problem on amd64.

In /boot/config-2.6.18-1-multimedia-amd64 on my machine it says:

CONFIG_HPET_TIMER=y
CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC=y

It's under 'Processor type and features'.

I also have CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y there, so maybe HPET options are 
hidden in menuconfig.
