Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought a HPET is a hardware 
feature that provides a higher resolution timing source:

HPET has come up in discussion a couple of times since we released our 
first 2.6.18 package. Once when Joel discovered that enabling it in the 
kernel config was stopping his Intel Core Duo laptop from booting (with 
a similar problem noted by Ben on a dual Opteron). The second was the 
current set of patches to jackd relating to HPET support.
