Perhaps your monitor cannot be auto-probed, or is not in the x.org database.

That's right, there is no vi by default. Please try nano xorg.conf 
instead. You may need to set the horizontal sync and vertical refresh 
ranges manually, which should be in the manual for the monitor.

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is the command you're after.
