Was this with Jack running, or direct to the OSS interface at /dev/dsp ?

That suggests your hardware and kernel are working OK together. Ardour 
is better for overdubbing anyway, because Audacity is not really 
designed for real-time recording and effects work. Audacity is a good, 
fast editor for splicing audio material together though.
