It sounds like this is a problem we need to solve on certain specific
hardware - it may even vary from motherboard to motherboard, depending
on the chipset used.

Have you tried explicitly stating the filesystem type with the -t
option? It seems that whatever options you have in /etc/fstab for
/dev/md0 are wrong. Does syslog contain any clues?
